After taking a break from my square series, I returned with this one after two years. Sometimes putting certain constraints on oneself can reveal the true depth of a subject. More of these are in the works. Writer Kathryn Davis says these remind her of blocks of ramen noodles. I just think they’re really cool looking and help me get over my perhaps irrational, distaste for square shapes. Each coil rolled by hand, one at a time, stacked and tapped into place. A black mason stain wash is applied as a simple treatment to bring out the complexity of the texture. Works in my “Square” series are never perfectly square. I do my best and go by eye for level. This one is close, but has a slight bend when viewed from the top which reveals the artist’s hand in the work. This work has never been shown in a gallery setting. I intended to keep it myself but have decided I can make more. Free delivery included to U.S. locations.
